Advice for a Well-Stocked Pantry

The New York Times' Minimalist column today tackles the stocking of your pantry. Mark Bittman, who writes the column every week and has a wonderfully straightforward manner about extremely simple cooking, offers advice on what ingredients you really need and which ones you should get rid of to make room for the others.

Example: don't bother with the aerosol oil sprays for cooking - stick to a pastry brush or your fingers with oil you alreay have. It saves room in the cabinet and helps you avoid scary additives they put in those spray cans.

While not a vegetarian by any stretch, he's also big on vegetarian cooking by making simple soups with sauteed veggies as well as being a strong proponent of incorporating a lot of beans into the diet. I plan on taking some of his advice as one of my unofficial new year's resolutions.

Makes sense particularly for people in NYC who probably have very little cabinet space!
